This page collects all of my syllabi, video tutorials, and posts related to my Clean Energy Finance course in the Lundquist College of Business at the University of Oregon.
Syllabi (also available with all of my courses here) – and contact me for any earlier syllabus:
- MGMT 410/510 – Fall 2025
- MGMT 608 – Winter 2025 (such a major revision that I wrote about it)
- Older ones: Winter 2021, Winter 2020, Winter 2019, Spring 2018, Spring 2016
Video tutorials (with run times):
- Simplest Financial Analysis (10:35) – This ten-minute video provides a simple path to an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) calculation for residential rooftop solar. The solar content is important in the course context, but I find the video to be effective for students who have only experienced financial concepts in a theoretical rather than hands-on way.
- Simplest (but not too simple) LCOE (18:32) – This slightly longer video provides a complete (albeit simplified) levelized cost of energy (LCOE) calculation. The focus is utility-scale solar, but the technique is a building block for solar+storage as well.
- IRR for C&I BTM storage (22:42) – This longish tutorial provides guidance for an IRR calculation of C&I-scale (commercial and industrial) behind-the-meter stand-alone storage. The example of TOU pricing is from Georgia Power.
- The following are ‘LCOE mini-modules’ for various stand-alone elements one can use to enrich a basic LCOE calculation:
- LCOE mini-module – construction time (4:20)
- LCOE mini-module – depreciation (7:28)
- LCOE mini-module – natural gas prices (10:13) – Students often seek to make reasonable comparisons between their utility-scale solar and solar+storage LCOE calculations; since natural gas is the most common head-to-head competitor, I’ve provided some quick historical context and analysis of the last two decades of natural gas prices.
The following energy-related posts have shown up in my Clean Energy Finance courses or are otherwise related to the material:
